Handyman in Moorhead, MN
Moorhead sits directly across the Red River from Fargo, the county seat of Clay County and, with about 44,500 people in the 2020 census, one of the larger cities in western Minnesota. It grew up as a railroad and river town in the 1870s, and its older neighborhoods north and east of downtown, especially around Concordia College and Minnesota State University Moorhead, are lined with homes from the early 1900s through the 1940s: foursquares, bungalows, story-and-a-half houses and plenty of student rentals carved out of single-family homes. After World War II the city filled in with ranches and split-levels, and from the 1990s onward newer subdivisions spread south and east toward the edges of town. The river shaped Moorhead in a very direct way. After the record floods of 1997 and especially 2009, the city bought out a large number of riverfront homes and turned the land into open green space and permanent levees, so some streets that once backed onto the water now back onto parkland and flood walls. The houses that remain near the river, and plenty that sit far from it, share the same heavy Red River Valley clay and deep frost that push foundations, slabs and door frames around through the year. That means cracked plaster and drywall, sticking doors and uneven floors are common in the older homes, and the newer ones see their own share of settling. Moorhead's mix of owner-occupied homes and college rentals also makes it a busy place for turnover work each spring and summer.
Moorhead's main lines are easy to follow. Main Avenue and U.S. Highway 10 run east and west through the middle of town, 8th Street carries north-south traffic past the universities, and I-94 crosses the south side on its way to Fargo. Downtown sits near the river and the Hjemkomst Center, home to a replica Viking ship built in Moorhead and a replica Norwegian stave church, a fitting landmark for a city with deep Scandinavian roots. Concordia College and Minnesota State University Moorhead sit just south and east of downtown and give the neighborhood around them its rhythm of move-ins, move-outs and game days. Parks run along the riverfront, including M.B. Johnson Park on the north side and Gooseberry Mound Park on the south, and the levee trails make for long walks once the snow melts. Winter here is the same as in Fargo: long, very cold and windy, with snow that drifts across the open land on the edges of town. Spring brings a flood watch and a scramble to clear gutters and downspouts as the snowpack melts.

Jobs we handle a lot around Moorhead
In Moorhead's older neighborhoods we spend a lot of time on plaster and drywall cracks, interior doors that bind or won't latch because the house has shifted, worn faucets and running toilets, original light fixtures and dim ceiling lights that get replaced with brighter, more efficient fixtures, and basement stair railings that have loosened. Rental owners near the campuses call us for make-ready lists between tenants: patching and painting walls, replacing blinds and broken closet doors, fixing locks and strike plates, and swapping worn bathroom fixtures. In the newer subdivisions on the south side, it's the usual settling-in repairs, TV mounting, fan installations and garage shelving. Across town, fall gutter cleaning and outdoor faucet shutoff keep us busy in October, and spring brings fence post resets, downspout extensions and pressure washing once the road grit is gone.
Questions we hear in Moorhead
Do you work on the Minnesota side of the river?
Yes. Moorhead and Dilworth are a regular part of our week. Minnesota has its own rules for electrical and plumbing work, and our licensed electricians and plumbers working on that side carry the Minnesota credentials those jobs call for, so a fan installation, fixture swap or toilet replacement in Moorhead gets done just as it would in Fargo, in the same visit as the rest of your list.
My older Moorhead house has cracked plaster everywhere. Is that a foundation problem?
Usually it's normal movement, not a crisis. Houses in the older neighborhoods near Concordia and MSUM have spent a century riding on swelling and shrinking clay, and lath and plaster cracks along those stresses, especially over doors, windows and stairways. We re-secure loose plaster to the lath, fill the cracks with materials that bond to old plaster and skim them smooth so they blend in. If we see something that points to an active foundation issue, like a crack that keeps widening or a wall that's visibly bowing, we'll tell you plainly so you can have it looked at.
Can you turn over a student rental near Concordia or MSUM before the fall semester?
Yes. Late May through mid-August is a busy window for this. Give us the move-out date, the move-in date and a list or a walkthrough, and we'll schedule the repairs, patching, painting touch-ups, fixture swaps and plumbing fixes so the unit is ready on time. We can also work while the unit is empty and send photos when it's done.
